Adrian Brunel was a notable English film director and screenwriter whose career spanned the silent era through the early sound period of British cinema. Born in Brighton, Sussex, England, in 1892, Brunel was educated at the prestigious Harrow School, where his mother, Adey, who worked as a drama teacher, exposed him to the world of theater from an early age. He dabbled in acting and writing plays during his youth, and even trained in opera, before working as a local journalist in Brighton and later taking employment in London with Moss Empires' bioscope show distribution division. In 1916, he co-founded Mirror Films with a friend, producing his first film, The Cost of a Kiss, the following year. Brunel's directorial career reached its peak in the latter half of the 1920s, and his surviving silent films are highly regarded by film historians for their distinctive innovation, sophistication, and wit. His major break came in 1923 when he was offered the directorial role for The Man Without Desire, starring Ivor Novello—a time-travelling story set in Venice that included location filming in Italy and post-production work in Germany. Between 1923 and 1925, Brunel directed a remarkable series of sophisticated comedy burlesque shorts that frequently lampooned the fads and institutions of the day, with playful visual wit and punning intertitles. Following the success of his shorts, which caught the attention of Michael Balcon, Brunel transitioned to directing full-length feature films for Gainsborough Pictures, including Blighty, The Constant Nymph, The Vortex, A Light Woman, and The Crooked Billet. However, with the introduction of talkies to British cinema, Brunel's career came to a sudden halt, possibly due to a legal claim against Gainsborough that may have damaged his reputation in the industry. He returned to directing in 1933 with a flurry of quota quickie productions, most of which are now considered lost, though his most familiar credit remains the 1935 Buster Keaton comedy The Invader. Brunel's last credit as director was the 1940 comedy The Girl Who Forgot, after which he worked uncredited as a 'fixer-up' for films directed or produced by friends, including The First of the Few (1942) and The Gentle Sex (1943). He published his autobiography Nice Work in 1949 and died in February 1958 at the age of 65 in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England. His work has since undergone a critical re-evaluation, with the British Film Institute including two of his lost films on its '75 Most Wanted' list.
