Adele Cambria: Movies & Box Office

Adele Cambria (12 July 1931 – 5 November 2015) was an influential Italian journalist, writer, and actress whose career spanned nearly six decades and left an indelible mark on the cultural and political landscape of modern Italy. Born in Reggio Calabria, she graduated in law from the University of Messina before relocating to Rome in 1956, where she embarked on what would become a multifaceted professional journey encompassing print journalism, television, theater, literature, and cinema. She emerged as a central figure in Italian culture before, during, and after the 1968 movement, working alongside prominent journalists such as Camilla Cederna and Oriana Fallaci. Cambria maintained close ties to the progressive left and the Partito Radicale under Marco Pannella, while also being a steadfast supporter of the feminist movement throughout her life. Her journalistic career began at Il Giorno in 1956, a newspaper recently founded by Gaetano Baldacci, and she subsequently contributed to numerous publications including Il Mondo, Paese Sera, La Stampa, Il Messaggero, L'Espresso, L'Europeo, Il Diario della settimana, L'Unità, and others. She co-founded and directed the magazine Noi donne from 1969 to 1999, a publication dedicated to women's issues. In theater, Cambria co-founded the renowned Teatro La Maddalena in Rome with Dacia Maraini, and authored several plays, including Nonostante Gramsci (1975) and In principio era Marx (1980). She was a close friend of Pier Paolo Pasolini, appearing in three of his films: Accattone (1961), Comizi d'amore (1965), and Teorema (1968). She also acted in Carlo Di Palma's Teresa la ladra (1973). Her literary output was prolific and ranged from biography to novel, including Maria Josè (1966) on the last queen of Italy, Dopo Didone (1974), and Storia d'amore e schiavitù (2000), which was a finalist for the Elsa Morante prize and reached seventh place for the prestigious Strega Prize. She worked with RAI television beginning in 1963 and contributed extensively to broadcasting on women's issues. Throughout her career, she received numerous accolades, including the journalistic prize Corrado Alvaro in 2008 and the Premio Letterario from Palmi in 2011.
