Born Aaron Richard Ashmore on October 7 1979 in Richmond, British Columbia, he grew up in Brampton, Ontario, the son of Linda Davis, a homemaker, and Rick Ashmore, a manufacturing engineer. Together with his identical twin brother Shawn, he began appearing in television commercials while still in elementary school, a early exposure that sparked a lifelong passion for performance. He soon accumulated guest appearances on series such as The Eleventh Hour, The West Wing, and 1‑800‑Missing, and a recurring part as Troy Vandegraff on Veronica Mars (2004‑2005). Ashmore’s breakthrough came in 2006 when he was cast as photographer Jimmy Olsen on the hit CW series Smallville, a role he inhabited for three seasons and returned to for the series finale in 2011. He further cemented his sci‑fi credentials by joining Warehouse 13 (2011‑2014) as ATF agent Steve Jinks, a character famed for his uncanny lie‑detecting ability. From 2015 to 2019 he co‑starred as bounty‑hunter John Jaqobis on Syfy’s space drama Killjoys, earning a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Recent work includes playing Duncan Locke on Netflix’s Locke & Key (2020‑2022), Gil Timmins on Ginny & Georgia (2023‑present), and Captain William "Wheezer" Heaseman on the Canadian medical series SkyMed (2022‑present). In film, notable credits include the eco‑horror thriller The Thaw (2009) and the crime drama 22 Chaser (2018). Outside of acting, Ashmore is an avid science‑fiction fan, citing Star Trek and The X‑Files among his favorites, and he shares a distinctive "GMA" tattoo with his brother as a tribute to their step‑grandfather.
