Yakshi 1968

Professor Sreenivasan, played by Sathyan, is a college lecturer who studies the unscientific and superstitious topic of Yakshis. A tragic lab accident leaves him disfigured, and the people who once held him in high regard begin to keep their distance, shunning him for his altered appearance. Into this tense atmosphere enters Ragini, a beautiful woman who accepts him as he is; Ragini, played by Sharada, and Sreenivasan marry and build a life that feels hopeful despite the social stigma surrounding his looks. Their bond grows; he finds in her a rare warmth that seems to outshine the scarred exterior and the whispered judgments of others.

But happiness gives way to doubt. Sreenivasan’s mind begins to hover around a dark question: could Ragini herself be a Yakshi? He experiences a troubling dream in which Ragini seeks to murder him in order to gain immortality by drinking his blood. The dream unsettles him, yet Ragini’s love remains steadfast, and in a moment born of affection rather than fear, she allows him to live and then disappears. When he awakens, Ragini is gone, and his behavior — marked by erratic lapses and questions from those around him — draws the attention of the police.

The missing wife becomes a central mystery, and Sreenivasan insists to the cops that Ragini was a Yakshi who vanished before his eyes. But the authorities are skeptical, dismissed by the weight of his strange claims. A psychiatrist is brought in to assess the situation, and he reveals a deeper truth: Sreenivasan’s life has been warped by a sustained mental illness, fueled by constant thoughts of Yakshis. In a shocking confession, he admits that Ragini was killed by his own hand while she was getting dressed, an act born from his illness rather than any supernatural intervention. The story leaves viewers to weigh memory against madness, superstition against science, and love against the fractures of the mind, offering a haunting meditation on how far belief can bend perception and fate.
