On a remote stretch of road known as Devil’s Pass, a married couple finds themselves stranded when a breakdown and dwindling cell service turn ordinary travel into a wait for help. Their quiet predicament soon becomes a backdrop for a broader, more unsettling sequence of events that follows two separate but intertwined journeys.

Meanwhile, Emily, frustrated with her boyfriend after suspecting cheating, teams up with her friend Leslie for a road trip. Emily takes the wheel in their bright Ford Mustang as Leslie cracks open beers and tries to let the tension melt away. At a fork in the road, Leslie suggests they veer onto Devil’s Pass. After a brief debate, Emily agrees, seeking a change of scenery and perhaps a little freedom from relationship drama. The mood is tense but hopeful, a promise of adventure on a road that seems to hold its own quiet menace.

Not long after starting along that desolate route, the women find themselves blocked behind a foul-smelling tow truck that is carrying the other couple’s car—a 1973 Ford Torino station wagon. The sight of the Torino fuels a mix of irritation and fear as the tow truck driver refuses to pull over, prompting Leslie to vent a curse under her breath. The moment ignites a dangerous chase, and the truck speeds past them, igniting a wary tension that will only tighten as the journey progresses.

At a gas station, the pair notice the tow truck again, its driver’s boots visible but not much else. They want to avoid further confrontation, so Emily signals to pull out, skipping an oil change in the process. The gas station attendant warns them to service their car soon, a practical reminder that their problems may be more than just a stubborn truck. The tow truck follows, its aggressive behavior escalating as Emily lets it pass, then tries to surge ahead only to be steered into oncoming traffic. The near-miss with a pair of children in a residential area deepens the sense of danger, and the two women retreat to a diner, hoping to lay low.

The wine-dark air around the diners thickens when they realize the tow truck is parked outside as well. A confrontation erupts with a patron they mistake for the driver, but he leaves in a pickup truck, and a waitress gently nips their fear in the bud by asking them to calm down and leave. They comply, slipping back onto the highway with a wary glance over their shoulders. The search for safety continues, but the danger is never far away.

Soon they locate the abandoned Torino that the tow truck had been towing, and hope returns that they might be able to clear the path and move on. Help appears in the form of a kind pickup driver who stops to lend a hand, and the two women explain their ordeal. Even as relief begins to surface, the tow truck driver reappears and strikes the abandoned car with Emily still inside, forcing her to flee. The pickup driver helps them remove the car from the road, but the tow truck closes in again, ramming their vehicle and driving it off the pavement with a tire blown. Emily and Leslie flee on foot, and Emily, who has sustained only minor injuries, stumbles and falls on a rock, losing consciousness.

When she comes to, Leslie is gone and the pair’s car has had its tire changed. With no clear destination and a mounting fear, Emily gets back on the road, only to be unsettled by the approach of more trucks prowling through Devil’s Pass. She decides to rest, sleeping in the vehicle while haunted by a nightmare of Leslie. The next leg of the journey resumes, and Emily eventually encounters a police officer who is relieved to find someone who might still be in danger. She pleads her case about the mysterious tow truck, hoping for help, but the trucker appears without warning and runs him over, disappearing again into the night. The chaos intensifies as Emily grasps for any sign of safety.

Desperation pushes Emily toward drastic measures. She obtains gas using a pistol she had acquired, forgets she is even holding it as she makes the exchange, and then attempts to call for help from a pay phone only to witness the tow truck shatter the phone booth. With no reliable signal and dwindling fuel, she climbs back into the Mustang and discovers the engine’s trouble has grown worse because she ignored the oil for too long. Realizing she can’t outrun the truck any longer, she plays a dangerous game of chicken, driving straight at the tow truck. The truck swerves at the last moment, balancing precariously on the edge of a cliff.

In a tense confrontation, Emily closes in and demands to know what happened to Leslie. The trucker offers no answers as he continues his perilous retreat. A sinking dread leads her to search the trunk when a phone begins to ring, and she discovers with a shudder what lies inside. With horror clinging to her, she closes the trunk and acts on a final resolve: she rams the tow truck off the cliff, choosing to end the immediate danger with a destructive act.

The story ends in a shadowy junkyard where the couple’s car, a police cruiser, and the pickup truck sit in storage, suggesting the road’s malevolent force may be ongoing. A new tow truck appears to menace a driver who bears a striking resemblance to Leslie, hinting at a recurring, otherworldly pattern rather than a single night of terror. The film closes on a note of eerie implication, a warning that Devil’s Pass may harbor more than just a terrifying memory for Emily and Leslie, and that some roads keep their secrets long after the cars stop rolling.

If you’re aiming for a longer, immersive read, this retelling keeps the original arc intact while weaving in more atmospheric detail to enhance mood and tension, staying faithful to the core events and the final, haunting implication of paranormal recurrence.
