Wilder Napalm 1993

Wallace, Dennis Quaid and his brother Wilder, Arliss Howard, are pyrokinetics whose powers first surfaced in a childhood tragedy that ended with the death of a hobo sleeping in a friend’s “secret clubhouse.” They kept their fiery gift a well-guarded secret as they grew apart and forged separate paths. Wallace fronts a traveling carnival under the stage name Biff the Clown, while Wilder works a humble job at a Kwik Foto booth in a fading mall and serves as a volunteer firefighter. The siblings’ lives begin to collide again when Wallace brings the carnival back to Wilder’s Florida hometown, stirring old debts and new desires.

Vida, Debra Winger, Wilder’s volatile wife, becomes a flashpoint in the reunion. Their marriage has become a delicate balance of distance and danger, and Vida’s return to freedom after a year of house arrest for a prior arson act amps up the tension. Wallace covets a dramatic comeback on The David Letterman Show, and Wilder wrestles with his loyalty to his brother and his own fractured life. The rekindled spark between Wallace and Vida ignites at a miniature golf course, where a kiss sparks a wider blaze of passion that complicates Wilder’s already fragile world.

The trailer park and the carnival become a fog of heat and smoke as the brothers spiral toward chaos. After a fiery confrontation on the rooftop of the family trailer, Wilder discovers Vida and Wally in a compromising moment, and a furious fight erupts. The confrontation ends with Wally setting the trailer ablaze, forcing authorities to intervene. All three end up in jail, and Wilder retreats to the Kwik Foto booth while Vida remains at the firehouse. Rex, Jim Varney, a friend and carnival partner, helps bail Wally out, leaving Wilder to confront a new, harsher reality. The pressure mounts as Wally dares Wilder to stand up for Vida, and the brothers’ clash escalates into a massive blaze that engulfs half of the carnival’s rides.

In the aftermath, Vida’s fate seems tied to Wilder’s, who now wears Vida’s house-arrest ankle monitor as a grim talisman of their shared entanglement. The movie closes on a surreal, bittersweet note: Wallace makes a triumphant reappearance on Letterman as Dr. Napalm, while Wilder and Vida watch from a distance, the smoke clearing enough to reveal a fragile, uncertain future for both brothers.
