Seventeen-year-old Daphne Simms [Celia Milius] learns from letters left by her deceased mother that her biological father lives in Los Angeles, and she sets out on a long, uncertain journey to find him. Leaving behind her New York home and her adoptive parents, she carries a quiet mix of hope, fear, and stubborn resolve as she ventures westward in search of belonging. The road ahead promises danger and discovery in equal measure, and Daphne steels herself for whatever lies beyond the familiar.

Along a remote stretch of highway, a seemingly kind middle-aged man offers a ride that quickly veers into danger. He drives her to a deserted area, where his intentions become clear, and Daphne must rely on quick thinking to escape. She miraculously finds the main road again and eventually reaches a gas station, where a new encounter awaits. There, she meets Fargo [Michael Parks], a man whose wary demeanor hides a sharper, more hopeful edge. At first, his attention feels like a hustle, but a tentative trust begins to grow as he agrees to help her reach California, driven by a mix of curiosity and a wish to do something meaningful in a world that has already tested her limits.

Their journey is not simple. They encounter a Hobo [Rupert Crosse] and tense moments with a Policeman [Norman Burton], each stop raising questions about trust, safety, and what they owe to one another. Misunderstandings flare, and a serious illness tests their stamina and their bond. Yet through these trials, a genuine friendship deepens, and a quiet but growing attraction starts to reshape their expectations of what lies ahead. The road, once a path of escape, becomes a shared space where they begin to see a possible future together, even as they cling to their own dreams.

Arriving in Los Angeles, Daphne finally locates her father, but the reunion is tinged with disappointment. The scene shifts to the adults who raised her—her adoptive parents—Mr. Simms and Mrs. Simms [Woody Chambliss], [Eva Novak], who arrive with forgiveness and a tempting offer: they are willing to help Fargo start over in New York. Fargo makes a stubborn choice, declining the invitation and urging Daphne to go with her parents. That decision doesn’t end their story, but it sets a new course for both of them. Later that night, as Fargo leaves a bar, Daphne waits for him outside, and she makes a decisive, hopeful choice: she will stay with him. Together, hands entwined, they walk down a dark street, stepping into an uncertain but shared future.
