Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf? 2013

“For beyond the difficulty of communicating oneself there is the supreme difficulty of being oneself”.

The film follows Anna Margarita Albelo, a charismatic filmmaker teetering on a midlife crisis as she approaches her 40th birthday. She has neither a steady job nor a girlfriend and lives in her friend Celeste Pechous’s garage in Los Angeles. She struggles to get her narrative film projects off the ground, leaning on memories of past independence as a filmmaker in France. Her longing for love feels like a constant distraction, and in the background she performs with the cabaret‑style act the Vaginettes, wearing a vagina costume along with backup dancers.

When she is almost ready to give up, Anna meets Katia Amour, Janina Gavankar, who becomes her muse. To justify spending more time with her younger admirer, she announces that she is working on an all-female remake of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and asks Katia to star in it. As the project moves forward, Anna must relinquish the role of Martha, which she wrote for herself, to diva Guinevere Turner as Penelope, and instead step into the role of Georgie. Meanwhile, Julia, played by Agnes Albright, develops a crush on Anna. As the frenetic production continues, the film explores ambition, ego, and desire with a blend of tension and comedy, leading to a series of misadventures that test friendships and artistic vision.
