After a brutal clash with outlaws leaves a caravan in ruins, a pregnant woman becomes the lone survivor. Found by the local Apache, she is brought to the village, where she dies in childbirth. The newborn is named Shining Sky, Sebastian Harrison.

As Shining Sky grows, he draws the attention and eventually the affection of Rising Sun, Lola Forner, a member of the tribe’s red neighbors. Yet many redfolk regard him with suspicion for being white, setting up a haunting tension that threads through his life. During a festive joust, Shining Sky accidentally kills a redfellow he’s jousting with, a misstep that deepens the tribe’s scrutiny of him and his place among his birth kin.

The Apache elders warn him that he cannot reveal the truth of his upbringing, reminding him that most whitefolk still bias against redfolk. This warning weighs on him as he struggles to find his path between two worlds. Meanwhile, among white settlers, he proves his mettle by taming an ornery horse, earning a place to live and a job that offers him a semblance of stability. He also captures the gaze of a white noblewoman, who finds him enigmatic and compelling at first, a spark that soon becomes a test of his loyalties and desires.

As his romance with the noblewoman deepens, Shining Sky learns that she is entangled with a web of power among white men who pursue redfolk as if they were prey. The relationship sours when a heated confrontation erupts: the noblewoman tears at her own clothing and accuses Shining Sky of rape, a charge that sparks a brutal backlash from white men and leads to his hanging from a tree. The act seems final, but fate intervenes when an Apache shaman passes by and cuts him down, sparing his life just as hostile whitefolk begin to raid the Apache villages.

Reunited with Rising Sun, Shining Sky and the woman go on the run together, and their bond deepens into the birth of a child. Yet the threat from white men intensifies, and they torment—and eventually kill—Rising Sun in a calculated bid to draw Shining Sky out into the open. In a moment of fierce retaliation, Shining Sky spears their leader, and, as he dies, crawls to Rising Sun’s body to lie with her, longing to stay in each other’s arms. Surrounding him, the white men advance with the intent to finish them, but one signal prompts a sudden retreat, and the siege dissolves.

Left behind is a baby, hidden near a rock, whom an Apache shaman eventually discovers. The shaman scoops the infant into his arms and carries the child back to the village, a poignant image of continuity that hints at the cyclical nature of life and conflict that frames the film’s narrative.
