Abe Dale Nathan Fillion is a grieving husband and father who endures a devastating tragedy when Henry Caine Craig Fairbrass murders his wife and young son before turning the gun on himself. Distressed and shaken, Abe attempts to end his own life, but a near-death experience leaves him with an unsettling gift: he can identify those who are about to die.
Using this newfound ability, Abe begins to intervene, saving three people from imminent death, including a nurse he meets during his recovery, Sherry Clarke Katee Sackhoff. As he witnesses their fates, he also learns a troubling truth: Henry, before taking his own victims, had once saved their lives as well, hinting that Henry might have harbored the same power to see death.
This revelation sets Abe on a dangerous path of inquiry. He travels to Henry’s house and discovers that Henry survived his suicide, prompting Abe to dig deeper into a mysterious phenomenon he terms Tria Mera (The Third Day), a belief rooted in the notion that on the third day—when Christ was resurrected—the devil takes possession of those who cheated death. Abe grows convinced that three days after he saves someone, the saved individuals will be possessed and driven to kill others, forcing him to confront a grim and terrifying responsibility: he may have to consider killing those he saved to prevent further tragedy.
Abe’s efforts to avert catastrophe take a turn for the worse when he fails to stop the second man he saved from killing others; he arrives just seconds too late, though he does manage to wrench the gun away from the would-be killer before the man can pull the trigger. He attempts to explain the terrifying cycle to Sherry, but she is initially unreceptive, until he guides her to the cafe where his wife and son were murdered. En route, Abe catches a glimpse of his own aura in the rear-view mirror, a stark forecast of his own death.
In the cafe, a tense confrontation unfolds: police who are already present shoot Abe just as he begins to lay out the ominous truth. In his final moment, he pleads with Sherry to kill herself before possession completes, but the police recover the weapon, and she breaks into hysteria, being rushed away in an ambulance. As the ambulance pulls away, Abe’s life force leaves his body, and his ghostly presence pursues the vehicle, appearing to Sherry as a spectral version of himself. He consoles her, and she dies peacefully after he places his hand over her heart.
With his own mission seemingly fulfilled, Abe—the incorporeal guardian—surges ahead and, still invisible to the living, intervenes in a critical moment. In front of the ambulance, he materializes to disrupt a deadly sequence: an 18‑wheel fuel tanker is disabled, a commuter bus sits halted, and the driver must swerve to avoid disaster, saving everyone at the scene, including the EMTs. Having completed his task, Abe finally encounters a bright white light ahead, where his family awaits, and he moves on.
Back at Blackmount County Asylum, Henry is tormented by the restless spirits of all the victims who died at the hands of people he saved, a haunting reminder of the cost of saving lives and the chilling balance of fate that surrounds Tria Mera.
