On a rugged camping trip in the Sierra Nevada mountains of central California, Steven Anders guides his two teenage children, Deborah Anders and David Anders, into a cave’s shadowed quiet. An earthquake rattles the terrain, and as they emerge, a ranch-hand outside mentions a brilliant solar flash that preceded the quake. The man soon falls ill and dies, his body dissolving into a powdery substance. Returning down the mountain toward civilization, they discover a chilling scene: nearly everyone they encounter has shed their human form into powder, clinging to clothing and leaving only a handful of survivors.

In the wake of this instantaneous collapse, fear and anxiety drive most people to prioritize self-preservation above all else. The family clamps onto a single, stubborn goal: reach Malibu, a journey of about 300 miles, where the mother had already returned from the camping trip.
