When the Bough Breaks 1986

In the opening backdrop, Alex Delaware Ted Danson is a renowned Los Angeles child psychologist who previously testified for the prosecution in the arraignment of an accused child molester whose young patients he had treated. The defendant’s release on bail sparks anger and distress among the victims’ families. Soon after, Delaware arrives at his office to find the man dead, apparently by suicide. The shocking turn leaves him shaken and burned out, prompting an early retirement to the mountains outside of Los Angeles to escape the pressures of his profession.

Months pass, and a police detective friend, Milo Sturgis Richard Masur, seeks his help with a new case. A man and a woman have been murdered in an apartment complex, and a little girl named Melody Quinn Marcie Leeds who lives nearby with her mother may have witnessed the killings. Yet the trauma is so fresh that Melody can’t remember much, creating a delicate challenge for the investigation. Milo hopes that Alex’s clinical approach can draw out essential details from the frightened child without causing further harm.

Alex agrees to lend his expertise, and what begins as a cautious interview gradually draws him deeper into the mystery.
