When Angels Sleep 2017

Germán, a businessman who is trying to juggle work and family life, drifts off behind the wheel and unexpectedly hits Gloria, a teenage girl, with his car after falling asleep. The moment he realizes what’s happened, he searches for help, hoping to reach emergency services, but the operator cannot locate him and Germán hesitates to tell the truth about the accident. Desperate to do right by Gloria and her friend Silvia, he places Gloria in the car and drives on in search of assistance, yet Gloria’s injuries prove fatal before they reach help. Silvia, who witnessed the aftermath, notices the damaged headlight and concludes that the car that struck Gloria is the same one she saw earlier; she recalls that the vehicle swerved toward them and never slowed or stopped, and she flees in fear, convinced that Germán must have hit them on purpose.

Germán, haunted by the fear of losing his family and facing jail, makes a drastic choice to erase the evidence. He drowns Silvia in a river and then hides both bodies in the water, weight sinking them to the bottom with stones. He returns home, cleans up, takes a shower, and lies down in bed, while his wife speaks to the police, offering the explanation that her husband had run over a dog, became extremely nervous, and had called emergency services in a panic in the heat of the moment.

A year later, Germán remains largely withdrawn from work as he focuses on preparing his daughter Estela’s upcoming birthday party. When his wife calls him for lunch, a TV report recounts the case of the two murdered teenage girls, and the investigation advances as the two boys who had been with Gloria that night are arrested as the main suspects. The story closes with the family’s quiet moment at home as the wife switches off the television, hinting at the unresolved tension and the fragile line between truth and fear that continues to define their lives.
