Timothy Bartlett is a fifty-something assistant bank manager in London whose working life and marriage have grown distinctly lacklustre. When his superior falls ill, he is asked to step in at a bankers’ conference in Southport. On the way, two young, fun-loving female students, Meg and Nikki, invite themselves for a lift in his car, and he grudgingly agrees. At first, he is annoyed by their company, but he soon finds himself drawn to Nikki, whose carefree energy offers a window into a life he’s been missing.

Their path takes him to a club where the band Pretty Things is playing, and the two spend the night together at his hotel. The following day, the conference fades from his mind as he indulges in a full day with Nikki—seaside amusements, laughter, and a rekindling of youthful zest. He confesses that he has fallen in love, and he even rents a private space they call a “love nest.” Nikki’s friend tries to warn him not to take things too seriously, since Nikki itself doesn’t seem inclined toward a real relationship. Still, he dives deeper into the moment, chasing a perfect day that has him feeling alive in ways work and routine rarely permit.

When he returns to the hotel for the night, he discovers hippies occupying the space, engaged in sex and vandalism, a chaos that interrupts the fantasy. In the bedroom, he finds Nikki in bed with a man her own age, a jolt that shakes the illusion. Meg later chides him, explaining that his flirtation with Nikki was really a two-day novelty, and Nikki has already moved on to someone else, a snapshot of the free-love era that defines the weekend.

The Southport experience, however, plants a new idea in him. He invites his wife to join him there, hoping to share the sense of renewal. When he meets her at the airport, she does not recognise him, a reversal caused by his counterculture-inspired clothing and attitude. He takes her out to shop for “young” clothes and together they revisit the places Nikki and he had explored. They recreate the high point of that perfect day, though his wife does not enjoy every moment as fully as Nikki did. Yet the transformation is real: he discovers that he can find nearly as much pleasure with his wife, and the two gradually embrace dressing in a way that feels fresh and modern, venturing into the present with a renewed sense of curiosity and connection.
