We're No Angels 1989

In 1935, amid the harsh realities of the Great Depression, two convicts, Ned and Jim, endure brutal treatment at the hands of a ruthless warden. The danger and desperation intensify when a vicious killer named Bobby narrowly escapes the electric chair, turning their fragile chance at freedom into a sudden, dangerous decision.

Driven by a mix of fear and opportunity, the pair slips away to a small upstate New York town near the Canada–US border. There, a web of mistaken identity unfolds: the locals mistake them for a pair of priests who are expected at the local monastery. The urge to flee again fights with the practical reality that crossing the bridge to Canada is blocked by misunderstandings and the warden’s relentless search party, leaving them trapped by the very cover they hoped would save them.

Still masquerading as clergy, Father Levesque welcomes them and a fragile sense of trust begins to form. An unexpected opportunity arrives in the form of a procession to the church’s sister church across the border, a rite that requires each participating priest to bring a person in need. In a difficult, morally complex choice, they select the deaf and mute daughter of Molly, a local laundress and prostitute, hoping to fulfill the requirement and perhaps find a way to safety through the ceremony.

The procession takes a dramatic turn when Bobby is killed by police during the event. In a tense moment of courage, [Ned]/the escapees’ plan shifts as Ned saves Molly’s daughter from drowning, a rescue that enables the girl to speak for the first time. The dramatic act of mercy deepens the bond between the fugitives and the town’s people, exposing the complexities of survival, redemption, and choice.

Meanwhile, the warden casts a looming shadow over the monastery and the men’s fates. Jim is drawn closer to a life of quiet purpose when a young monk John C. Reilly befriends him, encouraging him to stay at the monastery and consider becoming a real priest. This budding friendship and the possibility of a new path pulls Jim in a direction that contrasts with Ned’s growing desire to seek a future beyond the borders.

As the story unfolds, Ned decides to head to Canada with Molly and her daughter, while Jim’s path remains uncertain, shaped by the friendships and loyalties forged in the shadow of the monastery.
