What is the name of the cynical, middle‑aged film technician who is having an affair?

Jean, a cynical, middle-aged film technician, is six years into an affair with Catherine, a much younger shop assistant. He is married to Françoise, yet their marriage has long since withered into routine and detachment. He frequently promises to leave his wife, but never follows through — a promise Catherine clings to with dwindling hope.
The film opens in the heat of one of their many fights. Catherine is tired of waiting for Jean to change, while Jean vacillates between warmth, condescension, and cruel outbursts. Their time together zigzags through impulsive trips, quiet dinners, and frequent emotional breakdowns — mostly on Jean’s side. The relationship moves in repeating cycles: Catherine threatens to leave, Jean begs her to stay, and they stumble back toward a fragile peace that inevitably shatters again.
Catherine begins to carve out her own independence. She visits her family and feels the warmth and support of a world outside Jean’s orbit, gradually considering what life might be like without him. Jean remains stuck in his self-centered worldview, insisting he loves her while offering little in the way of stability or genuine commitment.
At one point, Jean separates from his wife, seemingly finally acting on a long-standing promise. But Catherine no longer sees this as the solution she once believed in. She has started dating a new man — kind, calm, and emotionally available — and his presence casts Jean’s erratic behavior in a sharper light.
In their final meeting, Jean attempts to win her back, assuming that with his “freedom” at last, Catherine will return to him. But she refuses. She is no longer the woman who waited by the phone, who begged for scraps of attention. Quietly but firmly, she walks away from the relationship — and from Jean — choosing a path that leads her away from the life she once tolerated.
