Tyree Battle, April Grace, is a single mother and DC cab driver who does everything she can to keep body and soul together for her 11-year-old son, Thaniel Battle, Cordereau Dye. One rainy night, Thaniel is pulled into a deli robbery by older kids, and the shopkeeper, Eli Zeal, Burt Reynolds, is shot in the arm. Tyree discovers them in the aftermath, tends to Zeal’s wound with antiseptic and gauze from a local mini-mart, and, weighing danger and love for her child, decides to seek safety far from Washington. She drives all night to Waterproof, Louisiana, a town of cotton fields that feels frozen in time, where her mother Viola Battle, JaNet DuBois welcomes them along with her brothers Natty Battle, Orlando Jones, and their 100-year-old grandfather Sugar, Whitman Mayo, as well as Brother Big, Anthony Lee. Tyree hopes Sugar can help heal Zeal with his homemade remedies, get Thaniel enrolled in a local school, and give them a place to stay for a while.
Back in D.C., police discover Zeal’s store is empty and close in on Tyree and Thaniel. The past begins to catch up with Tyree in Waterproof as secrets come to light: a long-ago romance with a white boy, Chris Hardwick, surfaces and starts to fracture the family’s fragile honesty. Chris Hardwick is played by Gil Johnson, whose presence reminds Tyree of the consequences that love can carry and the ways it can shape a life she thought she had left behind.
Meanwhile, Eli Zeal finds an unexpected sense of kinship in his hosting town, forming bonds with Sugar and Viola, and even attends church with them, gradually finding a place where he can belong and perhaps belong again. He begins to enjoy the slower rhythm of Waterproof, a stark contrast to the hurried crisis of Washington, and he finds himself drawn into a world where the past can be acknowledged but not rewritten.
As the family confronts its buried truths, Tyree confronts the possibility of forgiveness from those she left behind. She must choose whether to cling to the past she ran from or embrace a future that includes both her son and a trustful, repaired relationship with her family. The story threads together duty, memory, and the difficult road to reconciliation, underscored by the resilience of a mother trying to shield her child without surrendering her own history.
In a post-credits moment, Eli has sold his store in Washington to live out the rest of his days in Waterproof, choosing the quiet, communal life among the people who took him in when he needed shelter.
