In the summer of 1944, as the Red Army pushes west toward Warsaw, the Polish underground Home Army rises in revolt against the German occupiers. Stefan Zawadzki is an active, though not fully formal, participant who helps the AK survive in the shadows. He finds himself navigating danger at every turn, trying to keep a low profile as a SS officer, the brutal Johan Krauss, looms over him with intimidation and violence.

Stefan’s world widens when he meets two women who pull him into a larger story of courage, loyalty, and heartbreak. One is Ala, a nurse who embodies resilience even as the city trembles under fire and shells fall with alarming regularity. The other is Kama, a fellow underground fighter who serves as a swift messenger, carrying urgent orders across rubble-strewn streets. These connections pull Stefan into a triangle of affection and allegiance, and the three become entwined in the brutal realities of war.

As the uprising erupts on August 1, 1944, Stefan commits more fully to the AK, while Ala chooses to return to Warsaw to contribute as a nurse, and Kama persists as a link between the fighters and their missions. The assault on the city is relentless, and the Verkhovlike violence of the Germans—especially the infamous Dirlewanger units—turns ordinary streets into deadly mazes. Amid the chaos, Stefan’s mother and younger brother are killed by the SS, an event that drives him toward a painful, catatonic brink from which Ala must repeatedly pull him back.

The struggle intensifies as loved ones are torn apart and friends fall one by one. Stefan’s resolve hardens as he witnesses the city’s destruction while the AK fighters push back against overwhelming odds. In moments of vulnerability and grit, Stefan finds a fragile reason to keep fighting, embodied in the kiss that rekindles his will and the courage of those around him. With Warsaw nearly erased by the devastation, Stefan swims out toward a final sanctuary—a small island in the Vistula—where he glimpses Ala once more.
