Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris 2006

During the reign of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, music is banned in India because the ruler believes it pulls people away from God. This decree sets a long shadow over art and culture, sending musicians into hiding and forcing performances to take place in secret, far from crowded cities. Baba Makhdum [Mukesh Rishi] stays near Kasur with a small circle of followers and quietly guards the tradition of song and devotion. Waris Shah [Gurdas Mann] joins him, drawn by a shared love of the art even as oppression tightens its grip.

On Baba Ji’s suggestion, Waris moves to the village of Malkan Hans, a place where music remains allowed and where the people can hear a voice that speaks plainly of longing, pain, and transcendence. The Mughal ruler learns of Baba Makhdum’s activities and, in a swift and brutal act, kills him, marking a turn in the story’s tempo and stakes. Waris Shah meets Bhaagpari [Juhi Chawla Mehta] in Malkan Hans, and the two quickly feel a powerful connection; their bond deepens into love, even as the world around them grows harsher.

Saabo [Divya Dutta] is drawn to Waris as well, and she becomes deeply invested in winning his heart, willing to go to great lengths to claim him. Waris, meanwhile, settles into the village masjid and begins to craft the poem Heer, a work that captures the imagination of the village youth who now look to him as a guiding voice and a rising star in a time of censorship and fear. The village’s Qazi (Gurkirtan) grows furious as Waris’s popularity climbs, sensing a threat to the old order and to the moral certainties he upholds.

Waris is arrested by the Subedar after complaints from the Qazi, a turning point that tests his resolve and his belief that his music is a form of worship rather than rebellion. He makes a case that singing can be an act of devotion, a plea that resonates with some and unsettles others. Meanwhile, Bhaagpari is pressed to marry Saabo’s brother Inayat [Sushant Singh], as the two families had been betrothed since childhood, a collision of duty, desire, and fate that threads through the narrative.

Waris comes to a painful realization: to feel the deepest pain and to complete Heer, he must let Bhaagpari go. Saabo’s own longing meets resistance; she fights to win him but ultimately accepts the constraints of the moment and lets Waris go. The couple faces a harsh accusation—that they shared a relationship outside the bonds of marriage—yet they stand together, confronting the charge and proving their innocence by walking unharmed on burning coals, a test that becomes a defining moment for them and the village.

In the end, Waris leaves the village after the completion of Heer, bearing the weight of his art, his love, and the enduring question of whether beauty can endure under oppression. The tale intertwines music, faith, and human longing, painting a portrait of how art can illuminate truth and resilience even when power seeks to silence it.
