Walker Payne [Jason Patric] lives in a small Illinois coal town where the local mine is shutting down under new sulfur-content regulations. With the mine closing, jobs disappear and the town tightens its belt. Lou Ann, [Drea de Matteo], the mother of his children, still demands child support, tightening the financial squeeze on Walker.

In a bid to keep his head above water, Walker withdraws all his money from the bank where Audrey, [KaDee Strickland], works, and the two begin to see more of each other, eventually dating and moving in together. As Walker struggles to manage the money and the mounting pressure from Lou Ann, he attends a baseball game with his dog Brute, who becomes a symbol of a rougher, more dangerous world just beyond his cautious choices. Lou Ann, now entangled with Audrey, abandons Walker while he is behind bars, leaving the children in a precarious position. In a bid to keep the family intact, Walker’s friend Chester, [Bruce Dern], steps up to care for the kids until Walker can return to them, offering a quiet, steady anchor in a story underscored by economic strain, tough choices, and the personal cost of trying to do right in a hard world.
