The town’s spiritual heart is shaped by Langstrom, the bishop who sends Jud to Chimney Rock, and by the devoted Martha Delacroix, Wicks’s right-hand woman. The church’s day-to-day life centers on the groundskeeper Samson and the devoted, sometimes weary, parishioners who cling to a fragile faith. Alessia Yoko Fontana Grace, a pivotal figure in the Wicks lineage, has a fraught history with the church: it was her father Prentice Wicks who, guided by a promise of inheritance, kept Grace in the church’s orbit long enough to see the fortune vanish after his death. Prentice’s crypt looms over the church grounds, and the scandal surrounding Grace’s past becomes a shadow that haunts every new promise from the church’s leaders.

The town’s quiet is fractured by a clash of power and belief. Yet the community presses on, with Blanc departing as new parishioners enter for the inaugural service and Jud conceiving a plan to safeguard the fortune.
