Stranded near a small town in the Ukrainian steppe after a series of unexpected events, Lukas, an interpreter for an OSCE inspection tour, finds himself seeking refuge with a local man named Vova. As Vova guides him through the unfamiliar landscape and introduces him to his daughter, Marushka, Lukas’s initial disdain for provincial life begins to fade. He becomes captivated by his host and Marushka, embarking on a journey to discover a happiness he never thought possible, confronting a world far removed from his own.

Lukas, Serhii Stepanskyi, an OSCE interpreter, drives three colleagues into the deserted countryside of the southern Ukrainian steppe for an inspection tour of military checkpoints near the Crimea border.
Their car breaks down and with no cellphone reception, they find themselves in Beryslav, a district of Ukraine in Kherson Oblast. Here, Lukas walks in search of assistance but fails to find any. On his return, the car with his colleagues has mysteriously disappeared – though he has the keys.
