Jill Zoey Deutch is an aspiring baker in San Francisco who toils under the demanding and abusive Chef Bastien Nick Offerman. She repeatedly shares her world with her sister Isabelle Ciara Bravo, a cystic fibrosis patient who lives back in Austin, and their conversations over the phone reveal a fragile hope balanced by worry. After Isabelle’s sudden death, Jill begins leaving voicemails on Isabelle’s old number, unaware that the line has been reassigned to Wes Nick Robinson, an Austin-based real estate agent who is not what he first seems. Wes becomes deeply invested in Jill’s life, learning about her dates with Arthur Lukas Gage and the podcaster Tyler Toby Sandeman, as well as her unwavering dream of becoming a baker. Although he eventually realizes Isabelle is gone, he continues to fixate on Jill, drawing the concern of his engaged friends Andy Harry Shum Jr. and Breeda Leah McKendrick who warn him against crossing boundaries.

After Tyler ghosts her, Jill crashes a live taping of his podcast to call him out. Wes, who has talked his boss into letting him travel to San Francisco for work, shows up at the event and tails her afterward. He meets Jill again at her favorite overlook above the Golden Gate Bridge, where, tapping into their shared Texas roots, he suggests they grab tacos and he offers to show her around the city. Their bond grows as they explore the city’s sights and flavors, and Jill begins to trust Wes with her ambitions and fears.

On a tour bus, Jill confides that she isn’t sure what path she wants for her career. When the tour guide Walter Elijah Carnazzo quits, Wes steps in, entertains the riders, and serenades Jill. Though he is eventually cut from the vehicle, Jill steps off to kiss him, and he returns the gesture by cooking her a dinner that includes a chicken pot pie in a style reminiscent of his mother’s cooking. He reveals that he learned to cook while caring for his own ailing family, but he still struggles to tell Jill about the voicemails.

Wes invites Jill to be his date at Breeda and Andy’s wedding, and at the reception she tries once more to reach Isabelle by leaving a voicemail—only to realize that Wes’s phone is receiving the call. Disgusted, she confronts him and leaves, disheartened to discover that the voicemails may be lost for good after a software update.

Back at work, Bastien promotes Arthur to baker, even though he delivers a raw soufflé, triggering Jill’s fury and prompting her to quit. Her parents visit for her birthday and present Isabelle’s college fund, which Jill decides to invest in a food truck venture named Jill and Izzy’s, serving dessert nachos. To her relief, her former coworker Zella Megan Danso arrives and helps steer the opening toward success.

Breeda later updates Wes on Jill’s new business, and he even attempts to persuade his hacker coworker Felix to retrieve the lost voicemails. On New Year’s Eve, Wes leaves Jill a voicemail explaining that he has changed his work line and paid Isabelle’s old number through the end of the year so she can keep speaking to it. He invites her to meet at their favorite taco spot, José’s. Jill, visiting her parents, is thrilled to find that the voicemails have returned to her phone. With Breeda and Andy cheering him on, Wes rushes through the streets and finds Jill at José’s, where they share a kiss.

Later, as Jill and Zella serve their dessert tacos in a San Francisco park, Wes calls Isabelle’s number and asks for her blessing. In tandem, Jill calls the number and vows that this will be her last voicemail, trusting that she will be okay. The two dance to their shared favorite song, Robyn’s Dancing on My Own, reaffirming their new beginning.
