After a prostitution arrest, Mae vows to go straight. Cab driver Jimmy Doyle gets her a diner job, where she meets former prostitute Gert. Mae and Jimmy fall in love, marry, and save to buy a small business. When Gert asks Mae for money, Mae unwittingly becomes involved in a crime, prompting Jimmy to suspect betrayal and threaten to leave.
