Viennese Nights 1930

In 1890 Vienna, Franz von Renner [Walter Pidgeon], Otto Stirner [Alexander Gray], and Gus Sascher [Bert Roach] are three close friends who prepare to join the Austrian army. As Franz rises to lieutenant, his position forces a widening gap between him and his two companions, setting the stage for choices that will test loyalty, love, and ambition.

Stirner and Sascher fall in love with Elsa Hofner [Vivienne Segal], the daughter of a cobbler who embodies humble origins with big dreams. Elsa truly loves Stirner, but she chooses to marry Franz von Renner for wealth and social standing, believing that money and the status it brings will deliver happiness. Stirner is heartbroken, and he and Sascher head to the United States, where Stirner bankrolls a life through a job playing violin in an orchestra, yet struggles to support his wife and child. The move marks a painful rift, even as Elsa’s path crosses the Atlantic in pursuit of a different future.

In America, Elsa’s path unexpectedly intersects Stirner again, and their long-buried feelings flare anew. Stirner and Hofner dare to dream of a fresh life together, but the harsh truth soon surfaces: Hofner discovers Stirner is already married and has a child. Despite the enduring spark between them, Hofner makes a painful choice and returns to von Renner, sacrificing her own happiness for the sake of others. Forty years pass, and the story leaps forward to the year 1930. Hofner, now a grandmother, confronts the wavering fortunes of the Hofner family and plans for her granddaughter to marry into wealth. Barbara [Alice Day], Elsa Hofner’s granddaughter, falls in love with a composer who happens to be Stirner’s grandson, linking the generations in an unexpected circle. Hofner is forced to confront her past once more: she recalls the old romance with Stirner and grapples with the tender ache of what might have been. Despite the lure of money and status, she softens her stance, consenting to Barbara’s marriage and cherishing the memory of the man she truly loved, who is now gone.
