In the 1940s, the quiet village of Vadakupatty lives in harmony and happiness until a flood washes away their beloved deity Kannathaal, bringing drought and famine in its wake. The people cling to a long-held belief that Kannathaal is buried somewhere on their land, and even as hardship deepens, faith remains their guiding light. With Kannathaal gone, fear gnaws at night as a mysterious figure called the Katteri is said to roam the village, looting what little resources remain. Two factions rise to leadership in a village split by a bitter family feud, led by Mookaiyan and Kalaiyan, each vying to win the hearts of the people by proving they can restore the deity and drive away the night’s menace. Into this fragile scene steps a pot seller, a boy named Santhanam who sells pots to make a living and to woo his crush’s father, finding himself pulled into a web of superstition and desperation as the Katteri begins to roam.
That night, a thief fleeing the police after stealing jewels from another temple sneaks into Vadakupatty, stealing a pot from the pot seller’s home and concealing a jewel inside it before burying the pot on his land. He marks the spot with a rock, and when the attempt to escape is interrupted, the thief flees while the village feverishly hunts the Katteri. The chase culminates in a dramatic turn when a tribal man from Thekkupatty drives a bullock cart at high speed toward the pot seller’s house. The pot seller’s fear paralyzes him, the cart topples, and the Katteri slips away. The disturbance uncovers the buried jewel along with the pot, and the people interpret this event as Kannathaal driving away the Katteri. A few coins from the pot seller’s own bag spill onto the pot, and the villagers take the coins as offerings to be made to a god. Overwhelmed by the turn of events, the pot seller softens his resistance to belief, deciding to exploit the newfound divine contact to earn money—by presenting the pot itself as a conduit to the deity.
Two decades pass, bringing the 1960s and a harsher reality. [Santhanam]’s character, now a seasoned trickster in the name of religion, begins to con the people in Vadakupatty, using the guise of faith to line his pockets. A new Tehsildar arrives in the taluka and spots an opportunity to siphon more wealth through temple lands. He suggests leasing temple land as a means to harvest additional loot, and though initial talks falter, the scheming continues. Ramasamy pushes ahead, pressuring both factions to acknowledge the lease, squeezing every benefit out of the temple’s authority. But the Tehsildar’s plan takes a sharp turn when he enters the temple and stokes strife between the two factions, prompting the collector to issue a temple closure until the quarrel can be resolved. Into this fraught atmosphere returns Kayalvizhi, [Megha Akash], the childhood crush of Ramasamy and now an army doctor, who comes back to Vadakupatty after a long absence, adding a new layer to the village’s fragile balance.
As the land becomes a chessboard for greed, fear, and faith, the people of Vadakupatty are left to navigate the tension between belief and manipulation. The old trust in Kannathaal is tested by a modern wave of opportunism, and the returning Kayalvizhi brings a personal history that hints at a more complex future for the village. Through shifting loyalties, contested land, and a temple that stands at the heart of every dispute, the story traces how devotion—and the people who profit from it—shape the fate of a community that once lived in quiet harmony.
