On a gray, drab night in a small town, a young woman is murdered in an unusually brutal and sadistic manner as she makes her way home from the cinema. The shocking crime sows fear and quick whispers of blame, and the townsfolk settle on Hughie [Terence Knapp], a strangely behaved and not particularly bright local youth who has a habit of wandering the streets at odd hours, collecting stray pieces of debris—especially fragments of broken glass, which, unfortunately for him, were among the weapons used in the attack.
