A young man, Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome), embarks on an intense fitness journey in the confines of his bedroom, motivated by a stirring speech from the renowned wrestler and Olympic gold medalist Tom Brands. Surrounded by posters of the legendary Rocky Balboa, trophies, and medals showcasing his earlier accomplishments, Anthony’s life has not come without its challenges; he was born with a congenital amputation, leaving him with only one leg. Nevertheless, with unwavering determination, he dreams of wrestling at the collegiate level, making the High School Nationals Championship an especially pivotal night for him.

Guided by his supportive coach, Bobby Williams (Michael Peña), Anthony represents Mesa High School in Arizona as he competes against able-bodied opponents, proving that his disability will not hinder his aspirations. While the presence of scouts from Iowa University—a school he hopes to attend—adds excitement and pressure, Anthony showcases incredible skill and agility on the mat, clinching victory in the championship bout. Despite his triumph, the scouts opt for a more conventional choice instead of acknowledging his potential.

As he navigates the world of wrestling, Anthony finds himself faced with a potential opportunity from Drexel University. Although his mother, Judy (Jennifer Lopez), is thrilled about the fully funded scholarship, Anthony is hesitant, feeling that attending Drexel would shift him away from home and place him in a program that lacks a strong wrestling reputation. Deep down, he longs for the spotlight of Iowa State University, which has produced a remarkable 73 national champions.

With time running out, Anthony decides to join Arizona State University, where although his education is covered, he must earn his position as a walk-on wrestler under coach Shawn Charles (Don Cheadle). The journey is daunting, and amid rigorous workouts adjusted to accommodate his disability, he is faced with skepticism regarding his muscular fitness. However, Anthony’s commitment to training relentlessly shines bright, as he carries heavy weights using crutches and endures grueling hurdles.

Despite the hardships, Anthony’s spirit never wavers. When wrestling is unexpectedly removed from ASU’s sports roster during his sophomore year, the news profoundly impacts him and his teammates who believe in him. Even with challenges brewing from home, where his stepfather Rich (Bobby Cannavale) presents a troubling obstacle, Anthony stays focused on his goals. Rich often belittles Anthony, reinforcing harmful stereotypes about his disability while engaging in serious domestic issues that create turmoil within the family. Yet, through instances of courage and resilience, Anthony stands up for his family despite Rich’s volatility, leading to escalating conflicts that eventually prompt police involvement.

Eventually, with unwavering perseverance, Anthony gains acceptance onto the ASU wrestling team. He pursues excellence with fervor, and when the opportunity arises, he enters the NCAA championship, competing against Matt McDonough—the one competitor from the Iowa State University that Anthony longs to defeat. The stakes are high; winning would not only secure victory for him but also validate his years of hard work.

After an arduous battle, Anthony’s tenacity pays off as he triumphs, becoming the NCAA wrestling champion. His achievement marks a significant milestone; he is celebrated for being the first and only athlete signed by Nike after his collegiate career. Subsequently, he is appointed to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sport, and Nutrition in 2013, serving as a beacon of inspiration to many.

In 2022, Anthony takes a momentous step and returns to Mesa High School as the wrestling coach, where his aspirations and dreams as an athlete were first ignited. Meanwhile, his mother Judy completes her Doctorate in Education and steps into a role as the Assistant Dean of Students at Arizona State University, proud of the legacy they both have created against all odds.
