Unmade Beds 1976

The debut feature from Poe unfolds in a loosely sketched style that mirrors its protagonist, Rico, a self‑styled loner drifting through 1976 New York while dreaming of the mid‑60s Paris New Wave scene. As an unsuccessful photographer, he wanders daily, yearning for genuine connection even as his dialogue drips with inauthentic prose.

Rico (aka Little Rico), Duncan Hannah, is a bored, hard-drinking photographer in New York City who dreams of living in Paris and chasing an artistic reality to fulfill his French fantasy. He treats his camera as if it were a gun, loading it with bullets of film and chasing moments of affection as if they were targets.

After a string of casual encounters, he is shot when he asks a stranger on the street where to find Angel—the name of his dead dog—because he owes a sum of French francs to vague criminal associates.

At that moment, Eric Mitchell Paul Orsalino and Patti Astor Jeanne Moreau take over the plot, delivering a charged love scene that quickly gives way to a flashback sequence that revisits Rico’s earlier life and loves.

The narrative shifts in a medley of memory and mood, as the film folds into a retrospective mode marked by a series of black-and-white photographs of Rico and Paul, their dialogue echoing over a somber piano score that lingers in the air.

Back in the present, the movie ends with Rico whistling and singing One for My Baby (and One More for the Road) as Jeanne and Paul theatrically play at being gangsters on an East Village, Manhattan fire escape.
