Mitsuko, a thirty‑something Japanese secretary, lives a quiet, unambitious life. She starts an affair with Eiji, a rich, arrogant businessman attracted to her introverted nature, but ends it when he pressures her to change her values. While Eiji reflects on the breakup, Mitsuko falls for a laid‑back neighbor; the neighbor, however, is drawn to Eiji’s power, forming a love triangle that leaves one person unloved.
