Unlikely Angel 1996

One night, after leaving a bar, the blunt, no-nonsense singer Ruby Diamond Dolly Parton crashes her car and dies. In heaven, Saint Peter [Roddy McDowall] explains she can return to Earth, but only to reunite an estranged suburban family torn apart since their mother died. If she succeeds by midnight on Christmas Eve, she will earn her wings as an angel.

Ruby returns to the Bartilson home, posing as a housekeeper and nanny for Sarah Allison Mack Bartilson and her younger brother Matthew Eli Marienthal Bartilson, while their distracted father Ben Brian Kerwin Bartilson struggles to connect with them. The trio are initially cold toward Ruby, but she gradually begins to bridge the distances between them, guiding them to share meals, stories, and small acts of care that had long been missing.

As Ruby grows closer to Ben, Saint Peter’s warnings about boundaries become more pressing; romance is against the rules of the deal. Yet the pull between Ruby and Ben complicates the mission without derailing it. Matthew, hurt and restless, runs away from home as Christmas Eve approaches, and Saint Peter returns to remind Ruby that time is running out.

Ruby refuses to give up, insisting that the family deserves a chance to heal, even if it costs her a place in Heaven. With the clock ticking, she pushes to bring them back together, reigniting old memories and hidden affections, and teaching each member to listen, forgive, and extend a hand to one another.

Finally, as midnight arrives and the mission is complete, Saint Peter urges Ruby to depart. She hesitates, but the growing warmth of the Bartilson’s Christmas miracle convinces her to leave, knowing they will carry the memory of her kindness in their hearts. The film closes on a tender montage: the Bartilson family celebrating their first Christmas together in years, a sign that healing, love, and family can endure even after loss.
