After their mother’s sudden death, teenage twins Sophie McBride as Rachel and Tom Cameron as Theo travel to Auckland to stay with relatives. The loss has carved a quiet rift between them, turning what was once a shared, almost psychic bond into a hesitant distance: Rachel reaches out, seeking connection, while Theo clings to his grief and pushes her away.
They stay with Aunt Kay and Matthew Chamberlain as Uncle Cliff on the shore of Lake Pupuke, where the twins’ curiosity about the volcanic lake intensifies and the air around the old Wilberforce house grows heavy with a strange smell. Their days are a mix of normal teenage moments and a growing sense that something unusual is watching from the shadows of the nearby grounds.
On a visit to Mt Eden, the twins encounter Sam Neill as Mr. Jones, a peculiar, ancient-eyed man whose hands seem to glow with an inner fire. The encounter unsettles them, hinting at a larger mystery that links the living with forces they barely understand. Soon it seems the twins are not alone in being observed—there are signs that the Wilberforce family can sense their presence too, and the tension in the house begins to feel personal.
Theo, driven by a need to confront his grief and the unsettling glimpses he’s had, decides to push further and investigate the Wilberforce house. Inside, he and Rachel stumble into an environment that reads as alien, far from any ordinary world they know. The air is thick with a sense of something beneath the ground, something stirring and dangerous.
As they listen in, Mr. Wilberforce speaks of a hidden force waking beneath the earth, and a chilling warning—he will kill the twins if they pursue what he calls the fire-raiser. The words land with a cold finality, underscoring the danger that surrounds them and the cost of curiosity. Rachel, already anxious about closeness after her mother’s death, tries once more to reach out to Theo, only to be met with a wall he erects to protect himself from pain.
With each discovery, the twins drift closer to a moment of choice: stay within the fragile orbit of their relatives and the familiar, or venture deeper into a mystery that could redefine who they are. Theo’s resolve hardens as he sets off alone to find the fireraiser—the man he saw on the mountaintop—while Rachel weighs whether she should follow or step back to keep him safe.
This convergence of grief, fear, and wonder paints a story where the quiet surface of a New Zealand summer hides a pulsing, otherworldly secret, waiting to be uncovered by two siblings who must decide how far they’ll go when the flames of the unknown begin to rise.
