Spoilers ahead
Set on New York City’s Lower East Side, the film follows the rise of Uncle Moses Melnick, a former peddler who has become a wealthy garment factory owner. He commands a sizable group of landsleit — fellow Jewish immigrants from Kuźmina — through a paternalistic and domineering regime, aided by his nephew and fixer, Sam.
His attention then turns to Mascha Melnick, the teenage daughter of one of his workers; after she confronts him about her father’s mistreatment, he lavishes Mascha and her parents with expensive gifts. Though reluctant, Mascha agrees to marry him.
As Moses centers on the couple, Charlie, a young Marxist and Mascha’s admirer, organizes a strike at the factory. Sam suppresses the strike violently, and a settlement is eventually reached with the workers.
