Sarah Johnson is a pregnant young woman who goes out to dinner with her boyfriend, Simon. In a chilling moment, the elderly woman consumes a soup that contains Sarah and Simon’s unborn fetus, a grotesque ritual that marks the woman’s surrender to a dark influence. A clawed, black-cloaked figure rests its hands on her shoulders as she feeds, hinting at a supernatural force at play that will soon echo through the town.

In parallel, a different, perhaps darker, thread begins to unfold. A vibrant, impulsive young woman named Masha has a one-night encounter with a man she meets, an experience that shocks him when her face briefly distorts. The disturbance alarms his partner, Rachel, a museum director who already carries her own history of abuse and resilience. Masha confides in Rachel that she believes she will inherit the powers of her grandmother, a figure connected to Sarah’s earlier visions, and she hints at a lineage of witches and dark legacy. When Masha later visits Rachel at her office, she tries to extract Rachel’s personal stories and present them as her own, a troubling attempt at credit and control that Rachel confronts, recognizing the danger but also sensing something far larger at work.

That night, Masha’s grandmother dies, and the young woman seems to become possessed in tandem with the grandmother’s passing. The next day brings a Christmas-season party, where Dustin and Melissa are still reeling from the earlier tragedies. At the party, Masha violently attacks another guest in the bathroom, while Dustin and Melissa try to process the new, dangerous energy in their circle. Outside, a car strike claims Melissa’s life, and Rachel reveals that she was a close friend of Melissa, deepening the sense that the town’s strangeness is far from over.

On Christmas Eve, Mary, Rachel’s mother, awaits her daughter’s return when Masha arrives at Mary’s doorstep, insisting that Rachel is on her way with an embrace that never arrives. Masha presents a live rabbit as a gift, insisting the creature is Rachel who has been therianthropized. When Mary, unsettled, commands her to leave, Masha shards the moment by snapping the rabbit’s neck and sliding the lifeless body under the table. Peering beneath, Mary sees the dead form of Rachel, a revelation that drives her into the garage where a spectral image of [Masha]’s grandmother haunts her, pressing her toward a fatal act of self-harm.

As the night unfolds, Charlie, Rachel’s boyfriend, arrives and is restrained by Masha’s supernatural powers. A dramatic intervention by Dustin ends with him dousing Masha in gasoline and setting her aflame. Masha awakens in her grandmother’s house, surrounded by witches who summon a devilish presence that materializes and demands that the coven bow to a new queen.

In the days that follow, news of the carnage surfaces and a distressed Sarah is finally found by authorities. During an interview with a detective, she mutters that a witch ate her baby, a claim that lingers as the lights flicker and the room grows tense. In the final chilling image, the old grandmother’s spirit appears once more as Sarah laughs with a maniacal glee, sealing the sense that the darkness has not ended but instead has settled into the town as an enduring, familiar force.
