Angela Twitchell, the daughter of Rufus Twitchell, founder of Twitchell’s Toothpaste, longs to work at her father’s New York company. Yet her father remains stubborn, convinced that women have no place in the executive ranks, and he resists any fresh idea or bold advertising push. When Angela pitches a bold twist—cocktail-flavored toothpaste—he dismisses it, firm in his view that tradition should prevail over innovation.

Undeterred, she takes the idea to Schmidt under an alias. Schmidt, impressed by the concept and eager for a fresh edge against the competition, hires her to handle the sales. Angela’s arrival injects a new energy into the campaign, but the key test comes with her first big client, Claudette, the head of a pharmacy chain. Claudette’s loyalty to Twitchell’s is buoyed by her admiration for the company’s charming salesman, Pat O’Connor, setting up a complex dynamic that blends business and attraction.

On the road to victory, Angela sets out to outpace Pat in the marketplace. She suspects he is catching an early train to close deals aboard the rails, so she boards the same train and beats him to the next big customer. The move sparks a budding romance between the two, but Pat is none the wiser about Angela’s true identity. Meanwhile, back in New York, Pat and Rufus map out a strategy for the looming Chicago pharmacy convention, while Angela uses every tactic at her disposal to siphon sales away from Twitchell’s.

Tensions rise as Pat accuses Angela of unethical maneuvers and withdraws from her, leaving a rift between lovers and colleagues. The situation intensifies when Rufus and Schmidt broach the topic of a merger, negotiations stalling until Angela steps in again. Rufus is shocked and outraged to learn his own daughter has been working for a rival, yet Angela keeps her ground. She reminds them that her rights to Cocktail Toothpaste were temporarily granted to Schmidt for a year, and that she would only transfer those rights to a merged company—if and when it makes sense. The confrontation ultimately gives way to reconciliation, and Angela and Pat find a way back to each other as the story closes.
