Seeking guidance and a touch of holiday magic, Emily calls her friend, Faith Kerrigan, a divorced event planner based in San Francisco, hoping for reassurance and practical advice on balancing tradition with Heather’s evolving plans.

Meanwhile in Boston, Charles Johnson, an English professor and writer, wrestles with finishing the draft of his latest novel, his deadlines looming and his inspiration wavering. His brother, Ray Johnson, a successful owner of a software security company, suggests a little change of scenery could help him concentrate and get back into the flow of his storytelling.

Back in Washington, Emily decides to surprise Heather in Boston, only to learn that her daughter has already mapped out a trip with her boyfriend, Jason, to Phoenix, Arizona, to stay at his grandparents’ home. The timing seems off, but another possibility emerges when Emily and Charles discover a house swapping website and agree to trade homes for the week, hoping the change of scenery might bring clarity and fresh Christmas spirit to all involved.
