Set against the Ming Dynasty’s moonlit landscape, bonfires burn in a quiet, desolate night as Ye He Changgong [Francis Ng Chun-Yu] deliberately loses a duel to the Manchu warrior Nalan, stepping away from the title of Supreme Master of Martial Arts. He retreats to the sleepy Sideroad Town, tucked in the shadow of the Imperial City, choosing a peaceful future spent with his erhu and the simple rhythms of ordinary life.

There, Ming Yue Xin [Pace Wu Pui-Tsi] catches his eye, and a musical duel quickly evolves into something broader—a blend of attraction and wary one-upmanship. Their bond grows as they agree to meet on the roof of the Royal Palace at the next full moon to finish their shared sonata. Yet that very night, a break-in at the Palace by three masked thieves seeking a rumored treasure map interrupts their plans. They’re outmatched by Xin, a ninja in disguise, and the pursuit unfolds across the rooftops until the thieves are cornered at Lanruo Temple. Changgong follows, saving Xin from capture. In the ensuing scuffle, the treasure map is lost along with injuries that force all five participants to scatter and pursue separate paths, each nursing a flicker of hope to recover what was taken.

Five years slip by, and the treasure-seekers have dissolved into ordinary villagers. Changgong and Xin run the Dragon Inn with their adopted daughter Xiaowei, while the three thieves disguise themselves as a shopkeeper, a singer, and a monk. They all fall under the thumb of Lord Xu, a spoiled young landowner with a soft spot for Xiaowei. Xu struggles to win the villagers’ respect and to collect their rent, until a revealing confession shows he is the custodian of the hidden treasure map.

Meanwhile, Mayor Gu Yuejin accidentally dispatches a pigeon message about the treasure to the Imperial City. An army descends, including the second army led by Nalan. Xin, Xiaowei, and Xu pursue the treasure with renewed zeal, while Changgong confronts Nalan in a renewed duel. The five finally converge on the supposed prize, only to discover that the “treasure” is a simple spade. Nalan discards the tool, but fate reverses its course and a deadly misstep seals his end.

The film closes with a festive, town-wide gathering that brings all the citizens of the Sideroad Town together for a communal send-off, leaving a lingering sense of hard-won peace and shared memory.
