Spoilers ahead
Set in the 1930s, before World War II, in the last, shadowy corners of the incredible Knysna forest, the film follows Karoliena Kapp, a young woman born into a poverty-stricken community of subsistence farmers and foresters. The setting establishes a world where survival is hard and tradition runs deep, and where the forest is more than land—it is a living presence that shapes every choice.
Her life takes a sharp turn when she catches the eye of Johannes Stander, a successful businessman from town who promises to lift her from hardship and take her away to Knysna, where she can be trained to become a respectable lady. He paints a future of refinement and security, and the possibility of leaving poverty behind casts a bright light on her prospects.
