Hannah Faber, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, is a dedicated smoke-jumper who finds herself grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that claimed the lives of three campers and a fellow smoke-jumper in a devastating forest fire. Now stationed in a fire lookout tower in Montana’s Park County, she is burdened by grief and descends into a cycle of depression, trying to drown her sorrows through perilous acts linked to smoke jumping.

Meanwhile, Owen Casserly, played by Jake Weber, is a forensic accountant who becomes entangled in a dangerous situation when he uncovers the suspicious deaths of his boss, a district attorney, and his family, which he believes to be a result of a contracted killing. Fearing for his life and that of his son, Connor, portrayed by Finn Little, Owen goes on the run, seeking refuge with his brother-in-law, Ethan Sawyer, a Deputy Sheriff. In a call to Ethan, Owen requests help in gathering media attention to expose his findings, all while Ethan remains concerned about Hannah’s fragile emotional state.

As tensions rise, Owen and Connor find themselves hunted by the assassins, Jack, played by Aidan Gillen, and Patrick, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. They track Owen’s whereabouts to his home, only to find he has already fled. The assassins manage to force Owen and Connor off the road, leading to a dramatic cliffside encounter.
