In a quiet town, Open Hearth is treated as a mere rumor—a ruined, abandoned house said to be the lair of a Witch who feasts on children to stay young, girls to stay beautiful, and men for strength. The legend seems fanciful until Amanda, Caitlin Carmichael, is snatched from her bedroom, turning myth into immediate danger.

Max, Devon Werkheiser, is a teenager still grieving his grandpa, and he finds himself drawn to the mystery by his tomboy friend Sammy, Diana Hopper. Sammy carries a rough edge—her mother drinks, her father is a mystery, and the local police don’t trust her. Max and his younger brother Zach, Justin Deeley, clash at home as they juggle grief, anger, and a shared curiosity about the old house. The siblings’ friction sharpens when their father asks Zach to babysit on a night when the town’s kids are itching for trouble.

That night, Zach teams up with his friends Julie, Jess Adams; Carter, Chase Yi; and Tracy, Jackelyn Gauci. They head to Open Hearth to throw a rock at its window, hoping to prove the myth a hoax. Max and Sammy decide to shadow them, hoping to capture proof on camera. The woods become a backdrop for a tense, teenage rite of passage as Max and Sammy share a quick kiss on a shortcut and the group edges closer to the rumored horrors.

When Zach and the others reach the house, a shadow moves inside and a window is struck by one of the stones. They retreat to their campsite, where drinks loosen their tongues and their nerves. Max and Sammy return to the abandoned house, and Max’s stone finally hits a window, triggering a chain of eerie events. Back at the camp, Julie discovers a teddy bear that belongs to Amanda abandoned near the trees, and the friends rally to search the woods for the missing girl. The cries of a child lead them toward the house, and Julie bravely steps inside despite her friends’ warnings.

Julie, joined by Zach, discovers Amanda bound in the basement with an apple forced into her mouth. They escape the house with the Witch pursuing, racing into the forest where the town seems distant and the night stretches on. The campsite is left in disarray—Carter’s truck disappears, tents vanish, and the group pieces together that something monstrous is at work. Max, in a desperate plea, records a message asking anyone who finds the footage to burn Open Hearth to ashes, because the myth is real. The Witch abducts Max as Sammy’s scream cuts through the night.

Zach and his friends lose their way in the labyrinth of the Witch’s magic, wandering in circles until Zach finds Max’s bike and resolves to go back into the house to rescue his brother. The others press toward the nearest ranger station, while the Witch lifts Carter and Tracy away, leaving Julie and Amanda to hide among the brush. Inside, Zach frees himself and stumbles upon Max, only to be knocked unconscious by the Witch as she drains life from those she captured.

Meanwhile, Sammy reaches the ranger station and tries to alert the authorities, but the call is dismissed as a prank. She turns to Deputy Karl, Jamie Kaler, extorting help by threatening to expose him over a cigarette on duty if he doesn’t respond. Karl races toward Open Hearth, with Deputy Mahoney, Robert Young, following to back him up. The witch slays Mahoney in the house and closes in on Karl, forcing Sammy to carry on the struggle from outside.

As Max, Zach, Julie, and Sammy close in on a final confrontation, the Witch captures more victims and drains their souls. The group discovers a bottle designed to trap the witch and, with the help of Max’s grandfather’s legacy as a witch hunter, they improvise a plan. A flamethrower, lingering from the elder’s lore, becomes their weapon of last resort. They unleash fire to burn the Witch, who fights back with a fury that tests their resolve and teamwork.

When the police finally sweep the house, they find no corpses and a taunting calm—the Witch has vanished. Open Hearth is torn down and given a brand-new, bright purpose as a children’s park. Yet the film closes with a chilling hint: the Witch may still be out there, hunting children and waiting for the moment to return. The town’s fear lingers, even as the ground is cleared and the past is buried beneath play structures and new memories.
