The story unfolds in 1919 Siberia, where a young actor named Nikolai Yevlakhov embarks on a tumultuous journey with the White Army, seeking refuge from the encroaching Reds. During a challenging moment at the Rytva station, the Reds manage to seize the train carrying Yevlakhov. Faced with impending doom, the chilling Red commander, Plotnikov, meticulously assesses who among the White officers shall live or die. In an eerie twist, he encounters Yevlakhov, recognizing a striking resemblance to himself.
Just as the situation grows dire, the sounds of battle resonate through the air as the White cavalry crashes into the scene, initiating chaos. In this melee, Plotnikov meets his demise, allowing the prisoners, including Yevlakhov, to scatter and flee. Influenced by his upbringing, steeped in the ideals of symbolism and the belief that true acting transcends mere performance, Yevlakhov views his remarkable escape as an extraordinary opportunity for artistic expression, one only an actor could enact.
Driven by this newfound inspiration, Yevlakhov begins to gather intel about Plotnikov, a figure of considerable notoriety in the Siberian landscape. After meticulously crafting a narrative of his own resurrection, he crosses over into Finland, aided by smugglers, embracing a new life following the Civil War. From that pivotal moment, he assumes the identity of Plotnikov.
His remarkable acting prowess enables Yevlakhov to convincingly portray himself as the celebrated Red commander, even duping acquaintances who had previously known Plotnikov. As he delves deeper into his fabricated identity, the boundary between Yevlakhov’s true self and the character he embodies blurs. Gradually, he becomes entwined in this new existence, performing a play that reflects another’s reality until the riveting conclusion draws near. The portrayal of Plotnikov’s life becomes Yevlakhov’s own, culminating in a finale that arrives sooner than anticipated.
