Bernard, Peter Baldwin, a celebrated writer, arrives in a quiet Italian town by a lake for a winter retreat. He checks into an old hotel run by Enrico Salvo Randone and his daughter Irma Valentina Cortese. Secretly, he hopes to reconnect with their maid, Tilde Virna Lisi, a woman he once found captivating and even followed during his previous stay.
He is stunned to learn that Tilde died the previous winter, and that she was pregnant. The local accounts suggest she ingested poison and then cut her own throat, painting a grim picture of the events that ended her life.
Bernard refuses to accept suicide as the full story and resolves to uncover what really happened, diving into careful, if uneasy, questioning of the hotel’s routines and its quiet rhythms.
When Enrico’s son Mario Philippe Leroy and his wife Adriana Pia Lindström arrive at the hotel, they adopt a wary, almost conspiratorial air, moving about the lake at night in hushed, almost symbolic ways that heighten the sense of unseen tensions.
Enrico does not hide his disapproval of Bernard’s snooping, adding friction to an already delicate situation as suspicion and old memories begin to mingle in the dim hallways and along the shore.
