Policarpo, a proud and chauvinistic major, believes Brazil can solve its problems solely with its own resources. Driven by a visionary and idealistic spirit, he devises unconventional, often absurd schemes to forge a great nation, highlighting his relentless, if misguided, patriotism.

Who is the local doctor and former immunologist called to treat the outbreak?
Read the complete plot summary of The Patriot, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Near the town of Ennis, Montana, a local doctor and former government research immunologist, Wesley McClaren, who has an interest in herbal medicine and is a skilled weapons and self-defense expert, is called to a hospital as people begin dying from a mysterious and highly deadly disease. He quickly determines the cause is a dangerous airborne virus, prompting him to call in a Biological Response team that seals off the town while doctors rush to treat sufferers with a vaccine. Yet, the outbreak has already claimed lives, and the clock is ticking.
The investigation traces the outbreak to a local rebel militia leader, Floyd Chisholm, who has surrendered after a tense siege and is arrested on weapons charges. In a dramatic courtroom moment, Floyd, having ingested the virus himself in a vain belief that he also possesses the vaccine, spits at the judge, igniting a rapid and uncontrolled spread that threatens everyone nearby.
Floyd’s militia followers, who have been let go, storm the prison to free Floyd. They then invade the hospital, taking medical personnel hostage, including Wesley and his daughter, Holly. The group searches for the vaccine, only to discover that the vaccine they seek at the hospital is the same one they already hold—an intervention that merely delays the inevitable spread of the virus. Under the coercion of armed force, Wesley takes a blood sample from Holly and discovers she is infected, yet her body is somehow fighting the virus.
Wesley and Holly manage a perilous escape and head toward a farm where Holly’s grandfather lives. There, Wesley collects a blood sample from his friend Dr. Ann White Cloud and learns that she too is resisting the infection. The pair eventually gains access to a secret underground laboratory—an old workspace of Wesley’s—where they piece together why Ann and Holly remain unscathed: they have been drinking tea brewed from a specific wild herb associated with Native American healers.
Back at home, Wesley and Holly are briefly captured by the militia and brought back to the hospital, but Wesley manages to kill Floyd and disable the remaining soldiers. News of a possible cure spreads, and the Biological Response team acts quickly, gathering all the healing flowers they can find. They deploy them by helicopter over the town, instructing the population to boil the flowers and drink the resulting liquid, hoping to confer safety to those affected.
In the end, the narrative emphasizes a blend of scientific intervention and traditional knowledge, as a resistant community confronts fear, leadership failures, and the threat of a disease that tests both modern medicine and ancestral wisdom. The story unfolds with tension, resilience, and a race against time, underscored by the entwined fates of the doctor, the patients, and the people who stand between a cure and a catastrophe.
