The Narrows 2008

Based on Tim McLoughlin’s Heart of the Old Country, the film follows Mike Manadoro, Kevin Zegers, a 19-year-old Brooklyn boy torn between two worlds: his tight-knit Italian neighborhood in Bay Ridge and the wider, sophisticated life across the East River. When his photography portfolio earns him a partial scholarship to New York University, Mike faces a pivotal choice: how to balance his roots with a chance at something bigger in this two-tiered city where art and ambition collide. With tuition still out of reach and his father, a proud, disabled sanitation worker, unwilling to stretch the family budget, Mike turns to a grittier path to bridge the gap.

To fund his education and keep options open, he begins delivering for Tony, Titus Welliver, the local mob boss. The work is dangerous but steady, and it pulls him deeper into a world that both fascinates and unsettles him, testing how far he’ll go to secure his future without losing the life that already defines him. At NYU, Mike meets Kathy Popovich, Sophia Bush, a smart, cool, and independent presence who broadens his horizons and challenges his assumptions about what his life could become. Yet his longtime girlfriend Gina Abruzzi, Monica Keena, from the neighborhood—whom he has promised to marry—remains a powerful pull, reminding him of where he comes from and who he might hurt if he changes course.

As classes, deliveries, and new feelings pull him in different directions, the pressure mounts. The choice before him grows heavier with every decision, and the risk of losing something irreplaceable looms as a consequence of pursuing a life beyond his familiar streets.
