The Journalist 1967

Two-part film unfolds through the journey of a Moscow-based journalist, Yuri Aliabiev. In the opener, Encounters, he travels to a provincial city in the Urals after Varvara Anikina writes complaints about local officials, accusing them of waste and bribe-taking. In the factory district he meets Shura Okayomova, a thoughtful and attractive woman who works at a local plant. Yuri is drawn to her wit and charm, and he makes a sincere courtship attempt, but Shura declines his advances, choosing to stay in the town rather than pursue a flirtation. After this rejection, Yuri returns to Moscow and later goes on a business trip that takes him to Paris.

Garden and Spring continues with his life in Paris, where he encounters Annie Girardot. He attends a rehearsal of Mireille Mathieu and engages in long discussions with an American journalist about the merits and ideals of the Soviet way of life. Those conversations reveal a restless, reflective mind, torn between personal longing and political ideals. When Yuri returns to Moscow, he heads back to the Urals, unable to forget Shura and hoping to resume their relationship. He learns that Varvara Anikina has sent letters to local authorities accusing Shura of having a liaison with him, an accusation that spurs a Komsomol meeting to move Shura from her house to a hostel. Facing these pressures, Yuri goes to find Shura, confesses his love, and they decide to marry, choosing a future together despite the social scrutiny around them.
