To apprehend a ruthless killer who has slaughtered an entire family except for the sole survivor, Detective Joona Linna Tobias Zilliacus enlists Dr. Erik Mikael Persbrandt, a specialist in acute trauma and hypnotism, to coax memories from the comatose Josef Jonatan Bökman. Erik is an insomniac who relies on heavy sleeping pills, and his personal life is strained. Although he is suspended from practice, he agrees to help, but pulls back when he sees how unsettling the memories are for Josef.

Then a crisis strikes when Erik’s son Benjamin Oscar Pettersson is kidnapped after someone drugs his wife and him, leaving threatening notes for Erik to stop hypnotizing. In his search for his son, Erik hypnotizes Josef and discovers that the killer acted under the influence and instructions of his birth mother. By a further hypnotic session, Erik’s wife reveals that Josef’s mother is Lydia Anna Azcárate, a nurse who looked after him in the hospital.

Joona learns Lydia is mentally unstable and the kidnapper; together they locate the house where she is staying with Benjamin. They go there to retrieve him and arrest Lydia. Lydia, who believes Benjamin is her own son Josef and that the police have come to take away her child, fires her weapon and tries to escape with Benjamin in her school bus. In a panic, she drives her van onto thin ice over a frozen lake. Joona manages to save Benjamin, but Lydia drowns.

On Christmas Day, Erik and his family share a quiet meal together, while Joona visits his female partner at home.
