In this animated adaptation of J.R.R. The moment Bilbo grasps the ring’s power—an invisible, portable advantage—he slips away from danger and follows Gollum to the door, escaping into the wider world beyond. In the goblin tunnels, Great Goblin falls to Gandalf’s blade, and the dwarves press on, driven by a growing resolve to reach their homeland.

Escaping the tunnels, the company is pursued by goblins and Wargs and driven into a pine forest that blazes with danger. The Lord of the Eagles arrives in time to rescue them, lifting the weary band to safety in the skies before Gandalf departs to rejoin the quest elsewhere. The troupe is later captured by wood elves, and Bilbo uses his ring to melt into the shadows as he helps the others slip away. After weeks of peril, Bilbo and his companions float down the river in barrels, finally arriving in Laketown where the townspeople nurse them back to health. The journey climaxes as they reach the Lonely Mountain and Bilbo steps inside first, a new world opening before him.

Inside the dragon’s lair, Bilbo confronts Smaug with quiet cunning and the ring’s invisible glare, discovering a patch of vulnerable skin beneath the dragon’s scales. When Smaug lashes out, Bilbo escapes and warns the people of Laketown. The dragon is slain by Bard as he fires a fateful black arrow, bringing an end to Smaug’s fiery tyranny and casting Laketown into ruin as retaliation roars through the sky. The victory is hollow, for the dwarves return to a hall crowded with men and elves who demand a share of the treasure, a quarrel that sours into a looming war.

Tension mounts as Thorin refuses to part with the gold, and Bilbo’s gentle rebuke of his companion’s stubborn greed underscores the widening rift among friends. Thorin’s cousin Dain brings more dwarves to the mountains, and Gandalf returns just in time to warn of an approaching threat: Goblins are massing for battle. The disparate peoples—men, elves, and dwarves—set aside old grievances to face a common foe, while Bilbo uses his ring to stay hidden as the clash erupts around them. The Eagles join the fray, tipping the balance toward a hard-won victory.

In the aftermath, Bilbo discovers a wounded companion named Bombur and learns that seven of the thirteen dwarves remain. The dying Thorin forgives Bilbo in a quiet moment of reconciliation, and the adventurer accepts two small chests of gold and his trusty dagger as his reward. Gandalf guides Bilbo home, his parting words hinting that the real journey is only just beginning, thanks to the ring he has found and the wider world that awaits beyond the Shire.
