The Hide 2008

In a secluded bird-hide on the Suffolk marshes, Roy Tunt waits for one last sighting—the sociable plover—to complete the entire British list of birds. The middle-aged, single-minded observer has built a life around patient listening to the marsh and cataloging its species. His solitude is interrupted by the arrival of a disheveled, tattooed stranger who introduces himself as Dave John. After an awkward start, the two men gradually find common ground: they share a lunch, pour a drink, and drift into conversation on a wide range of topics.

Roy confides that he used to work in a poultry factory and that his wife left him for another man. The day grows heavier as the conversation travels through memory and motive, revealing the fragility of Roy’s carefully constructed routine.

Then a walkie-talkie crackles with a police message about a local murder, described as being committed by someone matching Dave’s description. Dave is armed, but his gun slips from his pocket when he falls asleep and is found by Roy. Roy’s tone shifts as he reveals the horrifying truth: he is the man wanted for murder—the victims were his wife and her partner. He recounts in clinical detail how he disposed of the bodies in a poultry factory mincer, turning them into a paste that he has served to Dave in the sandwiches they had shared earlier.

Desperation and danger escalate as Roy explains his plan to blow up the police helicopter currently scanning the marsh for him. Dave tries to plead for restraint, but the two are pulled into a brutal confrontation. In the struggle, Dave manages to reclaim the gun and kills Roy, ending the immediate danger but leaving the future unresolved on the windswept marsh.
