Giovanni, Carlo Cabrini, a factory welder in Milan, is offered a promotion that pulls him to Sicily for eight months. He accepts, leaving behind his longtime fiancée Liliana, Anna Canzi, who resents the relocation, and his elderly father who lives in an adjacent quarter. In a hotel, the nights are quiet, and Giovanni walks the surrounding streets in loneliness, his thoughts constantly returning to Liliana as he sits and watches television in the lounge, where he’s told to report to the factory plant the next morning.
