The Evictors 1979

In 1942, Ben Watkins and Ruth Watkins move into a quiet rural house in Louisiana, drawn by a sense of new beginnings but unaware that the property carries a dangerous legacy. The tale stretches back to 1928, when the bank foreclosed on the previous owners, the Monroes, and a violent shootout shattered the property. Since then, every new resident has met a brutal end, and Ruth grows convinced that someone is quietly trying to force them to leave. A creeping, slow-moving lurker becomes Ruth’s constant terror whenever Ben is away, and the house seems to breathe with a menacing history.

Across a series of haunting flashbacks, the same lurker is shown murdering several people who move into the house, knitting a pattern of fear that seems to reach toward the present. The tension builds as Ruth pieces together the pattern of violence, while Ben remains mostly unaware of how deeply the past is entwined with their future in the home.

Near the end, Ben himself steps into the confrontation, attempting to stop the lurker from hurting Ruth, only to be killed by accident when Ruth, trying to shoot the lurker, ends up shooting her husband. Grief and fear collide as Ruth resolves to move out, and she goes to say goodbye to her neighbors. But the chilling revelation hits hard: the lurker lives in the house next door. The killer is Dwayne Monroe Dwayne Monroe, who shares the neighborhood with Anna, who is actually Olie Monroe Olie Monroe. The real estate agent who sold the house to Ben and Ruth is Jake Rudd Jake Rudd; he’s secretly Todd Monroe, part of a decades-long real estate scam in which the Monroe family profits from selling the old house to unsuspecting newcomers, while his sister-in-law Olie Monroe and her brother Dwayne help carry out the terror to trigger new sales.

As a physical struggle unfolds, Dwayne murders Olie, then targets Ruth, only to be shot by Jake in what is framed as self-defense. The body count heightens the sense that the family’s machinations are rooted in the bloodline as much as in circumstance.

The closing scene leaps forward five years to 1947. Ruth, now unhinged by the endless cycle of violence and manipulation, has married Jake and willingly joins him in continuing the scam: they sell the old Monroe house to fresh victims, murder them, and live off the proceeds of each sale. The house’s dark history has become a life story for Ruth, who has embraced the same ruthless legacy that once claimed the Monroes and that Jake has sustained for decades.
